Latest news events: Increased Russian Aggression Targeting Eastern Ukraine’s Salt Mining Town
I will write as often as possible about the latest news events. Today I will write about Russian Aggression Targeting Eastern Ukraine’s Salt Mining Town.
Kyiv has reported that Russia has increased its attack on Soledar, a town in the industrial Donbas region of eastern Ukraine, with a “powerful assault” led by the Wagner contract militia. The situation for Ukrainian forces defending the town and nearby fronts has been described as difficult, as they are facing waves of attacks. Soledar is located a few miles from Bakhmut, where both sides have incurred significant losses in some of the most intense trench warfare since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine nearly 11 months ago.
According to Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar, Ukrainian forces were able to repel an initial attempt to take the town of Soledar, but a large number of Wagner units quickly returned with new tactics and more soldiers, supported by heavy artillery.

Malyar stated on Telegram that “The enemy literally step over the corpses of their own soldiers, using massed artillery, MLRS systems, and mortars.” She also stated that the attackers were drawn from Wagner’s best reserves. The Russian Defense Ministry did not mention either Soledar or Bakhmut in their regular media briefing on Monday, a day after facing criticism for a false claim of a missile strike on a temporary Ukrainian barracks.
Wagner is a private military company founded by Yevgeny Prigozhin, an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Known for its uncompromising violence and for recruiting some members from Russian prisons, the company is active in conflicts in Africa and has played a prominent role in Russia’s war effort in Ukraine.
Yevgeny Prigozhin, the founder of Wagner, has been trying to capture the towns of Bakhmut and Soledar for months, resulting in significant loss of life on both sides. Prigozhin stated on Saturday that the town’s significance lies in the network of cavernous mining tunnels beneath the ground, stating that it “not only (has the ability to hold) a big group of people at a depth of 80–100 meters, but tanks and infantry fighting vehicles can also move about.” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said in a video statement on Sunday that Bakhmut and Soledar are holding on despite widespread destruction, but that the situation in Soledar is “very difficult.”
Military analysts believe that the strategic military benefit for Moscow of capturing these towns would be limited. A U.S. official has stated that Prigozhin is more interested in the salt and gypsum from the mines, which are believed to extend over 100 miles underground and contain tritium-scale caverns. In the lines below, I draw a warning signal together with short guidance.

Evacuees from Soledar, such as Olha, a 60-year-old woman, reported fleeing the town due to the destruction caused by tank battles. Olha, who only provided her first name, said “there isn’t one house left intact” and described the town as being overrun by soldiers with automatic weapons. Pro-Russian bloggers have quoted Prigozhin as saying that his forces are currently fighting for the administration building in Soledar. The Ukrainian military has sent reinforcements to the town and two British volunteer workers are missing near Soledar, according to Ukrainian police.
In the Kharkiv region, a missile strike by Russian forces on a marketplace in the village of Shevchenkove killed two women and injured four others, including a 10-year-old girl, according to regional prosecutors. Video footage from police and Ukraine’s presidential office showed people lying on the ground injured and rescue workers sifting through the rubble, overturned and burning stalls, and a large crater. Russia has not commented on the reported strike on the village, which was recaptured by Kyiv in September.
Ukrainian authorities have reported multiple strikes by Russian forces across the country, including on the city of Kharkiv and infrastructure in the regions of Donetsk, Kherson, and Mykolaiv. The regional governor of Mykolaiv reported that 15 people were injured in the shelling of a coastal town. As the war continues to escalate, Russia’s military is facing domestic pressure to achieve success on the battlefield. Some voices within Russia are calling for escalation, following the loss of captured territory and high rates of death and injury.
Russia, which initially claimed to be acting to remove nationalists from Ukraine, now says it is defending against a Western threat to its own existence. Ukraine, along with its Western allies, who have imposed sanctions on Russia and provided Ukraine with weapons to defend itself, assert that the invasion was unprovoked.
According to a Western source, Britain is considering providing Ukraine with tanks for the first time. The Ministry of Defence did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Recently, France, Germany, and the United States all committed to providing Ukraine with armored fighting vehicles, fulfilling a long-standing Ukrainian request. The Kremlin has stated that these new weapons will “increase the suffering of the Ukrainian people” but will not change the outcome of the conflict.
